Cleaning out junk is never on top of anyone’s to-do list. But all that unwanted stuff piling up on your garage, attic, basement, back yard, or attic won’t magically clean itself.
The problem is when those piles get bigger and you have to figure out how to get rid of them. Your trash cans or recycling bins aren’t big enough, so do you rent a dumpster? And which size do you need?
Don’t second-guess. Check out our guidelines on what you need to know when hiring a junk removal company.
The Essentials of Junk Removal
Junk removal services remove items you no longer need or want. Most companies have specific lists and guidelines for the items they remove.
Junk can man anything from furniture, appliances, carpet scraps, household trash, clothing, construction materials, books, toys, hot tubs, garden tools, musical instruments, and much more.
Essentially, whatever you want to get rid of, junk removal companies will take it! Keep in mind, however, that most companies won’t dispose of expired and unused medicine or some medical devices.
While some companies only discard your junk, others will sort through for any salvageable items. However, you might pay an extra charge if you want a service to sort through your items. Inquire about our prices.
Types of Junk Removal
What you spend on removing your items depends on the size and amount you want to dispose of. Companies have different prices and services, and residential hauling is different from business hauling. Some companies charge on the material you’re disposing of while others charge by the number of truckloads.
Typically, removing renovation debris such as dirt, drywall, or carpet costs between about $100-$600 per truckload. Removing other items during your renovation project will cost more.
Always get a quote from junk removal companies and ask specific questions. Read our guide below that covers everything from the smallest amount of junk up to the ending largest amount.
If your renovations are minor and you have minimal junk, you might be able to leave it on the curb of your home. This is the best option if you can move the junk yourself and organize it into a big pile.
Curbside pickup is the cheapest option because crews won’t have to carry junk from the house into the truck. Our cost of curbside pickup ranges from $87-$497.
All you do is arrange a pickup time and leave your junk on the curb. A crew comes with a truck and load it up. You don’t have to be on-site or wait for the pick-up either.
If you think you have too much junk for a curbside pickup, take a picture and send it with details to the company when inquiring for a quote. They may recommend a different option based on the situation.
For larger projects, it’s best to consider a dumpster rental. Because you can keep it longer, you have time to dispose of items if you’re in the middle of a demolition or renovation process.
Many construction companies do this to ensure there’s only one junk removal process needed at completion of the process. While renting a dumpster is more expensive than a curbside pickup, it may be the best option if you have a lot of items to dispose of.
However, choosing the right size dumpster for the job will save you money. There are three or four sizes based on total cubic yards. For example, a 10-cubic yard dumpster is equivalent to about four trucks’ worth of junk, which costs between $250–$350.
A 25-cubic yard dumpster holds as much as eight trucks and costs between $400-$500. Cost depends on size and the overall weight, and some companies charge more for extremely heavy loads.
If your goal is to remove everything in a room or your entire home, you should consider a full cleanout service. Not all removal companies provide this service, but those that do can make the removal process much easier.
Typically, a team will remove all the furniture, appliances, and any other items you want to remove from your home. It’s the perfect choice if you’re tearing down part or all the house or have multi-room renovation projects.
This service will be the most expensive because of the time and labor involved for the crew to haul everything away and clean up. If this service fits your needs, ask the junk removal company about your project.
If you’re doing a deep spring cleaning or have renovation or construction going on, you don’t need to worry about junk removal.
Hiring professionals is the best way to remove your junk quickly and efficiently. When deciding on the best removal option, consider how much junk you want to remove, when you plan to dispose of it, and your budget.
Before hiring a junk removal company, make sure they are properly insured and ask whether there are any potential hidden fees that you should be aware of. Ask for an upfront price if possible and an agreement on the initial quote.
